🏗️ Keeping up with NSW Building Reform
📍 Some of the ADW Johnson Pty Ltd team recently attended a CCIA conference in Sydney, where Tom Kearney, Executive Director Policy & Programs at Building Commission NSW, provided an update on the implementation of the NSW Building (Approvals and Practitioners) Bill 2026.
The Bill has now passed, with regulations currently being developed ahead of the expected implementation in late 2028. The reforms will bring significant changes to the way manufactured and prefabricated homes are approved, certified and regulated in NSW.
🔑 Some of the key points discussed included:
🏠 Manufactured homes being treated as buildings and subject to the BCA
📋 New building approval and completion approval processes
✅ Independent certification requirements for prefabricated buildings
👷 Increased demand for the role and responsibilities of certifiers and approval authorities
📅 Existing approvals being grandfathered under the new framework

It was a valuable opportunity to hear directly from Building Commission NSW about where the reforms are heading and what they could mean for the industry as the supporting regulations are developed.
